Here are five steps you can take to help increase your spiritual growth and become closer to God:
- Change what drives you – Allow the spirit of God to control you. Gal.5:25-26, “If we live in the Spirit, let us also walk in the Spirit. Let us not become conceited, provoking one another, envying one another.”
Many of us make important decisions based on the desires of our flesh. i.e., The reasons we choose a particular job, apply for a promotion or choose a certain car to buy is not because it pleases God, rather, it is for our own pleasure (in most cases). If the spirit of God drives/controls us, then the reason for making particular decisions will be different. The flesh and the Spirit are in constant battle of control in our lives. Therefore, we must continue to ask God to give us the grace to allow the Spirit of God to take charge and be victorious in our life. Rom.8:9-11 says “But you are not in the flesh but in the Spirit, if indeed the Spirit of God dwells in you … if the Spirit of Him who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, He who raised Christ from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through His Spirit who dwells in you.” Let us set our mind on Christ, welcome him into our heart so that his spirit can will in us. When the spirit of God dwells in us, we will have the power to overcome the flesh. We will have the power to seek God first in all decisions of life.
2. Improve your relationship with other believers of Christ:
1 Thes.5:11, “Therefore comfort each other and edify one another…” From my past experience, I’ve learned that having biblical discussions (in a very casual environment) has allowed me to gain more understanding of the word of God. I learned from others and I believe they also learned from me during those discussions. At times, when we don’t have answers to our questions, we were encouraged to do independent research and ask those who are more knowledgeable. As we do that, we start to gain more understanding of who God is and His Word. Col.1:28, “Him we preach, warning every man and teaching every man in all wisdom, that we may present every man perfect in Christ Jesus.” I encourage you to engage yourself with other believers who enjoy discussing the Word of God and use every opportunity you have to attend bible studies.
We will discuss steps 3 to 5 in the next parts.
Prayer: Heavenly father, I ask for grace to live and walk in the spirit. Help me to make decisions according to your will and not be driven by my own fleshly desires. Help me to be someone who comforts and edifies others. Give me the boldness to discuss godly/biblical things freely with everyone you have connected me with. Help me o lord. Amen.
