Spiritual Maturity (Part 1 of 4)

2 Peter 1:3-9

Life is about progression. Human life, Animal life, Plant life all grow in time. When growth ceases in these lives, that means they are either sick or dead. As our life progresses, God wants our spiritual life to progress as well. He wants us to know him more, draw near to him and understand him in all aspects. As a parent, it is my desire for my children to grow taller, stronger, smarter and just overall better than their previous years. God wants the same for us as He is our Father. Ultimately, we cannot be “better” than him as we are not GOD (the creator of the universe), but he still desires for us to grow in spirit, drawing near to him. James 4:8(a) says, “Draw near to God and He will draw near to you.” As we develop a close relationship with Him, He will reveal deep and secret things to us. Dan. 2:22 says, “He reveals deep and secret things; He knows what is in the darkness, And light dwells with Him.”

What does it mean for our spirit to grow maturely?

The essence of maturity is having a deep knowledge of God and his word, displaying the fruit of the spirit as if it is part of who you are and achieving to become more like Christ.

How do we get there? We will discuss this further in the next parts of this series.

Make note that Apostle Paul testifies that spiritual maturity is an ongoing process that will not end until we die. Physically, people can grow without being matured. As we grow both physically and spiritually, we should strive for maturity.

Prayer: Lord, help me to draw closer to you so that secret and deep things of heaven and life can be revealed to me. Amen.
