Prov. 14:30, “A peaceful heart leads to a healthy body; jealousy is like cancer in the bones.” (NLT)
In our society, it is normal to see frequent production of newer and better versions of technical devices, tools, houses, and many other things. Consequently, as we see these new gadgets, we want them. This causes us to keep wanting more regardless of what we already possess. Amidst all these needy thoughts, how can we find true contentment?
Everything we have has been given to us by God, everything we do not have has been held up by God for reasons only known to him, unless revealed to us. The bible says for all things work together for our good to those who love him and are called for his purpose. Rom. 8:28
Rather than dwelling too deep on things we don’t have, ask God that his purpose will be fulfilled in you and seek his face. For those who seek his face will not lack a good thing. Psalms 34:10b
Sometimes, it may seem as if everyone around you have better lives or have acquired better things, but do not focus on what others have. Focus on what you have and appreciate God for it. The bible says, if you don’t appreciate the little, then how can you appreciate bigger things? Luke 16:10, “Whoever can be trusted with very little can also be trusted with much, and whoever is dishonest with very little will also be dishonest with much.”
In Matt.6:19-20, we will learn that our true riches are stored in heaven; Earthly riches are temporary and will pass away, but eternal riches last forever. Eternal riches can be stored in heaven in many ways, here is a few:
- Be content.
- Be a source of blessing to others with your wealth;
- Giving to the poor, the needy and the church.
- Giving without expecting a return from the person you gave to.
- Love God, serve him and obey his commandments.
Prayer: Pray that God will give you the spirit of contentment. At any time you feel tempted to dwell on what you don’t have, ask that the spirit of God will remind you of your eternal riches, stored up in heaven.
